My philosophy is centred on relationship-based training that values the bond between horse and rider over performance. I believe in fostering a respectful, 50/50 conversation where both horse and rider listen to each other. Learning should be enjoyable and safe, with a focus on improving skills in a relaxed environment. Horses are individuals deserving of respect and fair communication, not tools. As we prioritise their welfare, I am dedicated to promoting partnership in horsemanship.

“The horse doesn’t speak English. They speak limbic and they’re fluent in the language of nervous systems.” Dr. Stephen Peters

My principles are based on LIMA Training: Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive

LIMA is a humane, horse-centered approach that prioritizes positive reinforcement and avoids punishment. By using the gentlest, most effective methods, LIMA creates calm, cooperative horses while focusing on their well-being, environment, and individual learning needs. Trainers apply techniques such as clicker training, counter-conditioning, and desensitization, always using the least invasive tools to build trust and a strong partnership.

Core Principles:

  • Positive Reinforcement: Reward desired behaviors to encourage repetition.
  • Minimize Aversives: Reduce physical or emotional discomfort, using gentle pressure and release ethically.
  • Well-being First: Ensure the horse’s physical and psychological health, proper tack fit, and enrichment.
  • Trainer Competence: Use skilled, informed approaches tailored to each horse’s needs.
  • Individualized Plans: Adapt training to each horse’s strengths, goals, and learning pace.
  • Understand Behavior: Identify the root cause of behaviors, addressing fear, pain, or stress rather than just symptoms.

Meet Crissie Messina

Crissie began riding at the age of six and had her own horse by ten. At fourteen, she started working at a private yard in Italy, training young horses in show jumping and dressage. As her passion for
horsemanship and groundwork deepened, she became increasingly drawn to the Western riding
tradition. While in Italy, she had the opportunity to follow a horseman who introduced her to the work of Monty
Roberts and several other U.S. based trainers.

This experience sparked a deeper interest in relationship based training methods. After moving to the UK in 2016 to further her career in a culture that prioritises animal welfare, she attended the Monty Roberts tour and discovered Intelligent Horsemanship. She completed all of their courses, which further solidified her commitment to ethical, communication-based training. Wanting to build a path that connects both horses and people, Cristiana began pursuing the internationally recognised BHS qualifications. She believes that improving the lives of horses starts with educating their humans, giving people the right tools to truly understand and connect with their horses.
